St. George, Utah is a fun place to visit for a number of reasons: beautiful landscapes, great weather, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Town Square Park, located right downtown, is a wonderful place to enjoy all of the above. Though the park doesn’t feature any playground equipment, it has plenty of opportunities for physical activity and intellectual stimulation.

What Makes Town Square Park Great?

Fun water features

One of the top attractions at Town Square Park is the spash pad, waterfall, and lazy river. St. George can get incredibly hot in the summer months, and there’s no better way to cool down than running, jumping, and playing in the water.

The lazy river is very shallow and gentle, making it safe for toddlers to splash around in (with close supervision, of course!). Older kids will enjoy hopping from rock to rock and running through the streams of water jetting out of the ground at the splash pad.

When it’s time to dry off, there’s plenty of space to lay out on towels in the sun. There are benches and tables throughout the park, so it’s a great place for a picnic lunch. Another fun park nearby is Thunder Junction.

Wide open spaces

Just west of the water features, there are large grassy fields. Most of the time, the fields are vacant and would be ideal for kicking a soccer ball around or tossing a frisbee. On certain days, the fields play host to community events like farmers’ markets, movie nights, and art festivals.

Activities for kids of all ages

In addition to the water features and fields, Town Square Park is surrounded by a carousel, children’s museum, and the city library. No matter what your family’s interests are, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Carousel 

If your kids are shorter than 42 inches tall, they’ll need to ride with someone 14 years old or older. You must be completely dry to ride the carousel, so it’s a good idea to get your rides in before you play in the water.

St. George Children’s Museum

The children’s museum is located directly to the south of the splash pad. The museum has 12 exhibit rooms that encourage play, exploration, and hands-on education. Kids can learn about farms, transportation, art, dinosaurs, and more while engaging in imaginative play. The museum also hosts various events throughout the month.

Children must be accompanied by someone 16 years or older at all times. For children with autism or other sensory needs, Sensory Bags can be checked out at the front desk.

Because the museum is located in a historic building, it can be difficult to maneuver strollers and wheelchairs inside.

St. George Library

The St. George branch of the Washington County Library system hosts events, workshops, and clubs for people of all ages. Of course, you’ll need a library card in order to check out books, but many of the events are free and open to the public.

There are 5-6 story hours each week, including Toddler Time and Spanish Story Time. From September-May, you can attend children’s art and science clubs on alternating Tuesdays. There are also adult programs and trivia nights.

Ever-changing art installations

All throughout St. George, you can find beautiful, charming, and eclectic sculptures and wall murals, thanks to the Art Around the Corner program. The downtown gallery stretches along Main Street from 200 N. to the 100 S. block, ending in Town Square Park.

The artwork changes from time to time, so you may be able to see different pieces each time you visit the city. From a dragon made of license plates to bronze children playing on pogo sticks, the gallery walk can be entertaining for kids and adults alike. And, if you’ve got a few thousand dollars laying around, you can even purchase a sculpture.

Where is Town Square Park Located?

Town Square Park is located at 50 S. Main Street. The square starts at the intersection of Main St. and Tabernacle St. It occupies the entire block to the southwest of the intersection.

There are dozens of restaurants and cute shops to visit in the area. Green Gate Historic Village across the street features a bookstore, decor shops, and boutiques– all in historic houses and buildings from the early days of the city. Along Main Street, you’ll find thrift stores, art co-ops, and locally owned eateries.

One of the most well-known shops in the area is Judd’s. Thomas Judd’s store was established in 1911 and has been a staple of the community ever since. Inside, you can purchase candy, ice cream, soups, and their ever-popular breadsticks. After a long day of playing in the sun, there’s nothing more satisfying than sitting on a downtown bench, enjoying an ice cream cone and watching the world go by.

There is plenty of parking in the Town Square area. There is a parking lot to the north on Tabernacle St. If that lot is full, you can park on the south side between the library and children’s museum. There is also street parking and a free parking garage to the northeast.

What Are The Hours Of Town Square Park?

The park itself is open daily from sunrise until 10:00 PM. The various buildings and attractions around the park have their own hours.

Children’s Museum: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Open on some Mondays for special events.

St. George Public Library: Monday-Thursday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM; Friday-Saturday, 10:00 AM-6:00 PM.

Carousel: Monday-Saturday; hours depend on the season.

Best Ages For Town Square Park

Town Square Park can be fun for children of all ages, but teens may not enjoy it as much as kids under 12. Some older kids may enjoy relaxing or playing sports on the fields, rather than spending time near the water features.

The Children’s Museum is designed for kids between 18 months and 13 years of age, and for people with disabilities.

Facilities at Town Square Park

There is a set of restrooms and drinking fountains between the water features and fields. Shaded pavilions and benches are available so it’s easy to comfortably supervise your kids.

The park is also a wifi hotspot, so you can stay connected and work from the park if necessary. Power outlets are available near the seating areas.

Best Time Of Year To Visit Town Square Park

Town Square Park is best enjoyed from March-October. The water is shut off during the winter months, but the fields and other facilities are still open. 

There is plenty of shade available, so even if you don’t play in the water, you can stay somewhat cool during the hot summer months. Of course, it’s still a good idea to bring sunscreen and sunglasses.
