Exploring The Farm at Heber Valley Artisan Cheese

As Heber Valley locals, we absolutely love exploring hidden gems that are tucked right into our valley.  One of our new favorites is the Heber Valley Artisan Cheese dairy farm. We pass by here all the time and have even stopped for lunch a few times, but after our recent tour there, I love it even more.  Touring the Heber Valley Artisan Cheese store and dairy is one of the best family-friendly activities in Heber Valley and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

A Tour of the Kohler Dairy Farm

The Heber Valley Dairy offers daily tours at 11 am, and taking this Utah dairy farm tour is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. The price is quite reasonable and it’s also really educational and entertaining.  Our tour was so much fun, striking the perfect balance of fun and learning for my three boys.

Heading to Heber Valley Artisan Cheese and taking a Utah dairy farm tour is a fun outing for families. Technically, the dairy is called the Kohler Dairy.  We spent an enjoyable hour touring a farm that kept my kids, who are 4, 7, and 9, engaged and learning. It was the perfect length of time to engage excited the kids without it being to long or complicated.  It really showed us the effort behind our daily milk, and I’m convinced that my boys now have a better understanding of where the dairy products they love come from.

The tour kicked off with a simple hayride from a cheese factory to the farm, which was a hit with the kids. The first stop was seeing the baby calves, which live in small sheds and are individually cared for. It was such a fantastic way to start.  My youngest was especially thrilled to interact with them, finding a playful calf that seemed to fancy his fingers, sucking and licking them while my son couldn’t control his giggles.

Next we moved into the main dairy barn, where the milk cows stay. Despite housing over 300 cows, it was cleaner and didn’t really smell much at all, thanks to some smart farming technology. The farm has automated much of its operations, including a system to clean up regularly.  This was one of the most impressive aspects of our visit because we had no idea that so much technology went into running a dairy.

The cows seemed to enjoy our visit, coming up to get petted by the kids, a win-win all around. We were impressed by the milking process, which uses advanced technology to make everything run smoothly. Cows decide when they want to be milked, walking themselves to the milking area. There, robotic systems take over, attaching to the cows and milking them while monitoring their health and milk production.  The whole process was mind blowing.  They use technology for everything and it was great to see a process that we often consider old fashioned, streamlined into a modern and thriving business.  While there is plenty of hands-on work, the way that the dairy is run is nothing short of impressive.

Classes at Heber Valley Artisan Cheese

In addition to running the shop, the farm hosts a few classes, on how to make a few types of cheeses, providing a wonderful opportunity for community engagement and learning.  They’re all pretty affordable and would make a great date night (the classes are just for adults).

One of our favorite things about the Cheese farm in Midway is the special events that they host.  They’re really fantastic and are especially fun for kids.  Here are some of our favorites:
Baby Farm Animal Celebration – Usually in late April for a few days and you can come check out the new babies on the farm
Tractor Days – Lots of tractors on display that kids can come and climb on and explore
Harvest Festival – Fall festival with hay bale maze and activities for kids.

If you’re there in the summer, make sure to check out the You-Pick farm just to the south to get some fresh produce while you’re there. Here are some great places to stay nearby.
